Gameday -- January 2nd, 2014

Halifax vs Saint John

The Saint John John Mill Rats get another win in the new year with a 109-102 victory over the Halifax Rainmen despite losing star guard Anthony Anderson 8 minutes into the game.  Anderson would not return.  To the surprise of everyone, the early goings of the game had makings of a blow out for the Mill Rats as they captiolized on the Rainmen's poor shooting and used strong halfcourt defense to hold Halifax to 15 points in the first frame.  St. John would keep up the defensive pressure and keep Halifax to only 38 points total in the first half.  The Saint John squad would go into the half time break with a comfortable 18 point lead, leading 56-38.

Things would stay relatively to same to start the third quarter as the Mill Rats would push their lead to 22 points.  Fortunately for the Rainmen, they would find their shooting touch late and close the gap to 16 points at the end of the third.

Things turned around and it was all Halifax for a majority of the 4th, but the comeback fell short despite taking a lead 94-92 late.  Saint John would fight back to take the lead, and after several miscues by the Rainmen, would hang on to win the contest.  The Rainmen struggled across the board in all shooting categories, especially from the free throw line shooting a horrific 12-26 and 6-24 from beyond the arc.  Needless to say, the Rainmen left a lot of free points at the line.

After the injury to Anderson, Tyrone Levett would step up and drop a game high 26 points for the road team.  Johnny Mayhane and Alex Johnson both chipped in 17 points respectively. Six total Mill Rats would score in double digits including Singleton (14), Williams (11), and Crookshank, who lead the team in rebounds and posted another double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

For the losing side, Tyrone Watson would lead his team in scoring with 22 points and also had a double-double by adding a team high 11 rebounds.  Watson continues his strong play as he pushes for not only Canadian-player-of-the-year honors, but for New-comer-of-the-year honors as well.

After struggling for the better part of three quarters, Joey Haywood found his stroke and ended the game with 15 points and added 3 key three pointers to aid in the Halifax run.  Sefton Barrett pitched in 19 points and 7 rebounds off the bench and had several steals that helped start the Rainmen run.  Big man Kevin Young had a solid Stat line off the bench with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists, including an impressive fast break dunk that ignited the hometown crowd.

Halifax falls too .500 on the season with a 7-7 record while The Saint John Mill Rats improve to 7-11 on the season.
